teaching in the city

There have been some things to get used to as I teach school in the big city. Take field day, for example. Field day was held on Ward's Island - which is a strange place in the middle of the East River. It's got a fabulous track, lots of playing fields, and the stench from both a garbage transfer station and a sewage treatment plant. It also has two huge bridges that use it for support. It makes for a spectacular, if stinky, experience. See picture.

Were the bottom of your sneakers melted off by the time you left there? ma
