One of the projects we´re working on while we´re in San Juan is helping out at a soup kitchen. The girls did a tremendous amount of fundraising throughout the year and our school has purchased ´´real´´ playground equipment for the kids who go to the soup kitchen for breakfast and lunch. The women who work in the kitchen are incredible - they provide hundreds of meals every week, all for no pay. The work with whatever donations they can get.
Sometimes bad help is indeed worse than no help at all. There is a ridiculous structure (see photo) at the site of the soup kitchen. It was what was supposed to be a dining hall-flexible community space. Well, some genius (NOT!) crafted a building where the walls don´t meet the roof, so in the cold of the winter and intense heat of the summer, meals are served in the elements. Plus it´s just dusty and dirty.... So the next big project for our girls is to convince donors to give us enough money to tear down the old structure and build something with the appropriate engineering and architecture..... - anybody in my family ready for a trip south?
On a side note, I definitely have an ear infection.... nothing like feeling 5-years old again.... Too much flying and the stress of traveling in Perú caught up with me. I guess the good news is that I definitely feel at home in San Juan because this is where my body let down....

too bad on the ear infection!
it could also be from lingerning dampness--the three of us used to get swimmers ear all the time in the summers when we were little because we didn't do a great job drying out our ears after the pool or a shower, and wandering around in the humidity makes it all grosss...
yeah too much information sorry.
anyway hope it gets better soon!
